Okay, so here's the scenario- You go away for a long weekend to the lake. You take a bathing suit a couple casual hang-around outfits, lock the front door and head out. Sunday you drive up to the house relaxed and refreshed until you find out someone has broken into your home. They were good- they went after two things: Your jewelry and your husband's guns. $10,000 of jewelry is missing along with 2 handguns and your husbands prized shotgun and 3 other hunting rifles, valued at $10,000. You call your agent and he says:
" You have very limited coverage for both of these, looks like $1500 for the guns minus a $500 deductible and $2500 for the jewelry with the same deductible."
Insurance agents get in this bind A LOT- we talk and blog and suggest and cajole our customers to consider getting a "rider" added to their home policy to insure those things that are limited in coverage on the standard home policy here in Chesterfield County VA, but the prevailing reaction is:
- " I'll get that soon" or "It won't happen to me" - I can tell you from experience that it can't happen to you UNTIL IT DOES... Check with your agent, or give us a call to review your current policy. You have sublimits of insurance on your policy. To schedule $10,000 of jewelry costs about $85 annually. Why wouldn't you do this? As odd as it sounds, if your home is destroyed by fire typically the jewelry and guns will be covered up to that $10,000 limit, BUT the sub-limits in most home policies limit for theft and mysterious disappearance. Our advice is to take the time to check out your policy.
